Three rules for flush mounts and semi-flush fixtures.
Up to 100 sq ft: an 18-inch diameter fixture. 100–200 sq ft: 22–26 inches. 200+ sq ft: 30+ inches or multiple fixtures.
A 150 sq ft bedroom: a 24-inch flush-mount centerpiece.
Ceilings under 8 ft: flush mount. 8–9 ft: semi-flush mount. 9+ ft: consider a pendant or small chandelier.
A standard 8-ft hallway ceiling — a flush mount sits flat and clears walking traffic.
As a baseline, multiply room square footage by 1.5 to estimate total bulb wattage equivalent needed for comfortable ambient light.
A 200 sq ft living room calls for ~300W equivalent — one 24-inch fixture or two smaller ones.
